HGTV‘s new series “The Flip Off” is coming soon and Christina Haack, Tarek El Moussa, and Heather Rae El Moussa are giving fans a glimpse at what to expect. Haack teased it as HGTV’s “biggest competition show” and fans are eager to watch all the drama play out onscreen.

‘The Flip Off’ Guarantees Rivalry and Excitement

“The Flip Off” pits Haack against his ex, Tarek El Moussa, and his wife. HGTV teased the new series in a January 15 Instagram post, giving fans some behind-the-scenes scoop. “‘The Flip Off’ is going to be the biggest competition show to ever hit HGTV,” Haack explains in the video.

Tarek expresses, “I never imagined I’d be shooting alongside Christina once more, yet here we are, experiencing this incredible twist of fate as we go head-to-head in ‘The Flip Off’ to determine who reigns as the top flipper globally.”

Haack assures that the show will be filled with “intense moments,” featuring “tension” and “exceptional design.” She elaborates, “It will include everything that fans love.”

In the video, Tarek shares insights into the show's premise. “To succeed in ‘The Flip Off,’ it's all about the return on investment,” he clarifies. “Even if we design the most stunning home, if the financials don’t add up, we’ll end up losing. Ultimately, winning is our top goal.”

Haack discusses the difficulties associated with flipping homes. “The toughest aspect of the flipping journey is locating the right property,” she explains. “Our goal is to find the best-priced house, ideally the one in the worst shape located in the least desirable area — and then, naturally, sell it for the highest profit possible.”

Naturally, stress levels are elevated. Haack points out, “We are all extremely competitive. Nobody wants to come out on the losing end.”

Tarek states, “I’m familiar with Christina — she’s driven to win. We share that same goal. So, there’s definitely going to be some tension.”

Haack expresses her excitement, stating, “I believe fans are really fond of ‘Flip or Flop,’ and reviving it in this competitive format? I’m confident it’s going to be a hit with viewers.” She adds, “This could turn out to be the most outstanding show HGTV has ever produced.”

“The Flip Off” is set to debut on HGTV on January 29.

“During the six-episode battle, each team will each attempt to find, buy, renovate and flip a house for the biggest financial gain. The competitors’ skills and budget will be put to the test as they renovate the kitchen, main suite, living room, guest suite, extra bedroom and exterior of their chosen properties. The team who comes out on top wins ultimate bragging rights — and a first-class vacation paid for by the loser.”

Followers flooded the comments section of the HGTV Instagram post, buzzing with enthusiasm for “The Flip Off.” While a few fans chose to take sides, the majority conveyed their appreciation for everyone participating in the show.

'The Jeffersons' at 50: The Impact of Norman Lear on Black Representation in Television

Jim McKairnes  |  Special to USA TODAY At 11 seasons, “The Jeffersons” ran longer than any of producer Norman Lear’s classic 1970s comedies, including its parent show “All in the Family.” But the more important history it made came as soon as its first episode, 50 years ago this week: CBS' “The Jeffersons” marked the first Black-family comedy for which Black didn’t signal economic struggle.   George and Louise Jefferson (Sherman Hemsley and Isabel Sanford) were plain rich. Credit the Black Panthers. At least, in part.  As racial barriers fell and onscreen representation increased in the early 1970s, the biggest gains were in half-hour comedies. Some of these “Black shows” ‒ a series adaptation of Neil Simon’s “Barefoot in the Park,” military comedy “Roll Out” (from the creators of “M*A*S*H”), and barbershop sitcom “That’s My Mama” ‒ came and went. Two became giant hits: NBC’s “Sanford and Son” and CBS’ “Good Times.” But their tales of impoverished lives unfolding in famously Black neighborhoods ‒ the Sanfords were junk dealers in Los Angeles’ blighted Watts community, while “Good Times” was set in a Chicago housing project ‒ offered singular, even stereotypical, portraits: Two steps forward, one step back.   View pictures in App save up to 80% data. 'The Jeffersons' were elevating their status. “The Jeffersons” made its way into primetime to shake things up. The show followed the beloved neighbors of Archie and Edith Bunker as they reveled in the prosperity of their growing dry cleaning enterprise, swapping their modest Queens rowhouse for a lavish apartment on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The challenges they faced were more about cultural adjustment than financial hardship, as the newly affluent sought to blend in with the established elite.   The spinoff became a certainty following Hemsley’s initial appearance in Season 4 of “All in the Family.” Louise Jefferson, played by Sanford, along with their son Lionel, portrayed by Mike Evans, had been recurring characters since 1971. However, Hemsley, who was envisioned by Lear as the head of the family, wasn't available until 1973.   In his 2014 memoir titled “Even This I Get To Experience,” Lear recounted how a chance meeting outside of the entertainment industry helped to accelerate the process.   How the Black Panthers Influenced a Television Family That Wasn't 'Dirt Poor' “One day, three representatives from the Black Panthers burst into my CBS office, declaring they were there to speak with the garbage man – me,” he recounted. “They criticized ‘Good Times,’ labeling it as trash. ‘It’s merely a white man’s interpretation of a Black family… every time you feature a Black man on television, he’s portrayed as impoverished.’”   “The Jeffersons” emerged as his answer. Following an unofficial first episode marked by a “Family” farewell, the show premiered midseason on January 18, 1975. Strategically placed in CBS' Saturday lineup, right after its successful predecessor, the new comedy quickly garnered a strong viewership. As George and Louise established their lives, audiences embraced them as well. By the end of the 1974-75 season, the show ranked as the fourth most-watched program.  “The Jeffersons” benefitted from a larger cast than seen in Lear’s other hits, too, allowing for more storylines to explore. Costars included Marla Gibbs as the Jeffersons’ housekeeper, Zara Cully as George’s live-in mother, Paul Benedict as their British neighbor, and Berlinda Tolbert as Lionel’s girlfriend (and later, wife), whose parents, played by Roxie Roker and Franklin Cover, made history as primetime’s first regularly featured interracial couple.   View pictures in App save up to 80% data. However, 'The Jeffersons' mostly steered clear of political themes. While early episodes addressed the social politics stirred by their move to Manhattan ‒ stories about identity, invoking terms like Uncle Toms and passing ‒ “The Jeffersons” didn’t court headlines the way “All in the Family” or Lear’s controversial “Maude” did. In time, race was less of a driver, and the show became a more conventional, often broad sitcom. Even the stridency of George Jefferson’s prejudice on display in “Family” ‒ the character, “imagined as a reflection of what (Archie) Bunker’s bigotry would look like in ‘blackface’” ‒ was toned down, wrote Mark Anthony Neal for Ebony in 2012. His boisterous persona was more comical than confrontational, a hot-air balloon of strutting pomposity punctured by his family.   Even the occasional “special episodes” ‒ Louise’s reflections on her less-affluent past, Lionel’s dip into alcohol abuse, George’s reunion with an old Navy pal, now a woman ‒ orbited more around the human condition than a racial one.   One notable exception: 1980’s “The First Store,” a flashback episode about Jefferson Cleaners opening on the same day in 1968 as Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination. After Lear’s 2023 death, The Hollywood Reporter included it as one of the “Six Norman Lear TV Episodes That Changed the World.”  The show was never nominated for Emmy Awards in writing or directing categories, and won just two in total, for videotape editing and for Sanford (the first black woman to win Best Comedy Actress). “The Jeffersons” was sometimes criticized in the Black community for perceived lapses into stereotypes, or for portraying George as a buffoon. (The Baltimore Sun’s Gregory Kane called it “demeaning to Black people” in a 1999 essay about race and television.) But the show facilitated a prime-time transition from “Black shows” to series that simply offered Black casts, cemented by the arrival of NBC’s “The Cosby Show” in 1984.  “Its characters opened doors for future black actors,” wrote Danielle Cadet in The Huffington Post after Hemsley’s 2012 death. “And its success proved that African American sitcoms did, in fact, resonate with general audiences.”  The resonance of “The Jeffersons,” which ended in 1985 after 253 episodes and 15 timeslot changes, stands as its legacy: the first Black sitcom since “Sanford and Son” (1972-77) to rank among TV’s top five shows, the first to rank as TV’s top comedy for a season (1981-82), CBS’ third-longest-running sitcom at the time of its cancellation and, still, the longest-running Black comedy in network-TV history. Lear restaged one episode in a live 2019 ABC special that featured Jamie Foxx and Wanda Sykes in the lead roles. After numerous attempts, “The Jeffersons” finally made it up that hill.

Pressure Grows on $33 Billion Broadcaster to Reinstate Beloved Trio as Michael Strahan's Show Faces Closure

Those good old days of GMA3. These must have been the words ringing around the minds of Good Morning America’s fans when they were surprised with a special guest on Wednesday. Michael Strahan, who returned to ABC to host GMA, had been pretty busy with his other TV gigs. And it was supposed to be just another normal day on the show with co-anchors Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos. However, Roberts suddenly popped up with a surprise for Strahan, saying, “Ke-ke! Your girl, Keke Palmer’s gonna be here!” Well, hearing that brought a huge smile to Strahan’s face as he giggled, “I can’t wait.” So, in the next episode, Keke did appear, as Roberts had already teased the former Giants’ defensive end. And boy, what a reunion it was! Former co-stars greeted each other, with Michael sarcastically saying, “What’s up, redhead?” And Keke jokingly replied, “My guy.” Then, without wasting any time, to impress the viewers with their long-awaited reunion. Keke and Strahan participated in a fun marching challenge on the GMA set, where they had to navigate small squares marked by blue tape while wearing blindfolds. To add to the excitement for GMA fans, they attempted to stay within the designated squares without being able to see. Both of them humorously acknowledged their challenges, with Michael joking that his large feet would make it tougher, while Keke faced the added difficulty of balancing on her heels. But after 45 seconds of marching, the two slowly removed their blindfolds. Now, what they discovered is that both were a foot outside those squares but still in sync: “That’s insane,” Keke added as Strahan replied, “At least we’re in sync!” Yeah, they both somehow lost the challenge but remained in the same place. Talk about connection! In addition to the entertaining events, GMA enthusiasts had the chance to enjoy the dynamic presence of Keke and Michael Strahan after quite some time. Following the show's wrap-up, fans took to Instagram with a special appeal for ABC. They expressed a desire for the network to reunite the beloved trio of GMA. ABC has received a unique request from the viewers of Good Morning America. Keke’s reappearance on the show couldn’t stop long-time GMA viewers from getting emotional on Instagram. When the show shared the clips of Strahan and Keke’s get-together, they weren’t going to miss the chance to call out ABC. One of them wrote how the former co-stars still had the chemistry going, “They still got the chemistry! Give Keke, Michael and Sara another show GMA!” Now, just for those who aren’t familiar with Sara Haines. She was also one of the co-hosts before the pandemic changed everything. When multiple TV networks were shutting down their studios because of the COVID-19 outbreak, ABC also had to follow the herd. And this eventually led to the sudden cancellation of GMA in 2020. With that, all three of them moved on to their separate endeavors. But Strahan remained as one of its co-anchors when GMA again rebooted due to popular demand. However, Sara had already become the regular co-host of The View, while Keke Palmer continued to juggle her growing movie and TV career. Even this time, she came on the show to promote her new upcoming movie, “One of Them Days.” But watching Keke come back to the show, one she was once the heartbeat of, fans tagged ABC and Disney studios to announce a separate show for Michael Strahan and Keke, “I think we need a Michael & Keke show! Am I the only one? Mornings w/Michael & Keke.” There was another who praised the presence of Keke as a co-host, “I hope she goes back to cohosting with him! She is a phenomenal host and journalist! The way she conducts her podcast is everything! @keke is literally like a ball of sunshine.” While many of them threw requests on the door of ABC, there was a fan who was pretty upset with their decision to cancel GMA back in the day, “They messed up when they canceled Strahan, Keke, and Sara.” Now, watching the fans’ outpouring reaction to Keke’s guest appearance on the show, maybe ABC could pull some strings and bring the trio together once again. 10 Overrated Films That People Consider Intellectual but Are Actually Lacking Depth

These days, it seems like many viewers jump to call anything slightly avant-garde pretentious, whether it be a quirky French film or literally anything by Yorgos Lanthimos. Sometimes, people are right – a movie that tries too hard to say something profound while using cinematic cliches or cheesy metaphors certainly deserves the label. Some movies are truly innovative and captivating, yet viewers often label them as pretentious simply due to a lack of understanding. We inhabit a society where films can create significant divides among audiences, and the rise of the internet has only added to this complexity. It’s perfectly reasonable to consider a film pretentious if you feel it fits that description, but there are certainly cases where certain films are undeniably more pretentious than others. Frequently, filmmakers try to mask their pretentiousness by employing dramatic cinematic methods that mislead audiences into believing they're experiencing something deeper than it truly is. We've identified ten films that exemplify this phenomenon—showcasing themselves as intriguing and subversive works when, in truth, they are merely pretentious and rather shallow. From Barbie to Contempt, here are ten pretentious movies everybody thinks are smart but are actually stupid. 10 absurdly self-important films:  Barbie (Greta Gerwig, 2023) Greta Gerwig was once an indie darling known for great performances in movies like Baghead and Frances Ha. When she transitioned to primarily being a director, Lady Bird and Little Women demonstrated real talent and an obvious appreciation for cinema. Then, the marketing sensation Barbie came along, which felt like a champion of capitalism (ironically enough, one of the main systems that oppress women) rather than a nuanced look at women’s issues. Scraping the surface of feminism with its plastic pink sets, cheesy musical numbers, and dramatic monologues that state the obvious, Barbie was loved by many and hailed as a necessary piece of cinema. In reality, it’s nothing more than a vehicle for excessive merchandising that treats the audience like they’re genuinely stupid. Men (Alex Garland, 2022) When are men going to realise that it’s not their job to explain, especially through the medium of cinema, the plight that women go through simply for being female? With his 2022 film Men, Alex Garland highlighted the abuse and manipulation faced by many women at the hands of men in a way that added nothing to the conversation other than pointing out a very well-known fact. Using Rory Kinnear to play every creepy man in the film, even editing his face onto a child’s body for one strange encounter, might seem like a bold artistic choice, but really, Garland was biting off far more than he could chew. The filmmaker simply failed to make a strong point besides mansplaining sexism, yet we get the impression that Garland believed he’d delivered a feminist masterpiece. Sadly, many viewers fell for this trap when, in reality, the film has nothing interesting to say. Saltburn (Emerald Fennell, 2023) There was a lot of discourse surrounding Saltburn when it came out in 2023, but that didn’t stop it from earning five Bafta nominations and various other nods from prestigious institutions. The movie truly thinks it is saying something interesting about class, using gothic tropes to convey themes of mystery and suspense while drawing parallels to pre-existing pieces of media. However, the finished result is a messy, overly-stylish, and tone-deaf take on privilege from an extremely well-off director. There are various eye-roll-worthy moments clearly intended to shock, like the infamous bathwater scene, but nothing the movie does feels truly subversive or transgressive. It’s as though Fennell saw Pasolini’s Teorema and decided to dilute everything interesting about it into a cringe-worthy, vapid, and lazy take on early 2000s-era Britain. It’s not clever, and it’s not groundbreaking, even though it apparently seems to think it is. Antiporno (Sion Sono, 2016) Antiporno is one of those films that some people herald to an unusually high degree, seeing it as a visionary, experimental piece of cinema that dissects female sexuality. While it’s beautifully shot, with bright colours that engulf the screen, this is a mere facade that hides the fact that Sion Sono really has nothing to say. The film tries to make a commentary on sex, objectification, porn, and femininity, but really, Antiporno is just a shallow mess of nudity and exploitation. Like Men, the film makes you wonder why so many male filmmakers think they’re the best-suited storytellers to explore themes that are so focused on female issues. At the end of the day, a stylish and well-shot film can’t make up for a lack of substance, which is Antiporno‘s fatal flaw. Contempt (Jean-Luc Godard, 1963) Jean-Luc Godard made many great films throughout his career that have been called pretentious by some, but they’re still revered, and his contributions to cinema are highly influential. Contempt, on the other hand, remains a divisive piece of art that we can hardly blame people for calling pretentious. Despite featuring French icon Brigitte Bardot, the movie has her do little more than argue or appear naked. It comes to feel like a lot of wasted potential, with the movie’s debates on art, relationships, and the human condition drawing out over painfully long conversations that we feel like uneasy voyeurs to. While many people will continue to herald the movie as one of Godard’s best, we’d argue that he’s made plenty of other films that convey their messages in a much more interesting and captivating way. Contempt isn’t a bad film, but it definitely shouldn’t be held to untouchable heights. Malcolm & Marie (Sam Levinson, 2021) The shine has come off Sam Levinson significantly after The Idol, which underlined that just because he created one massively popular HBO show, handing him almost complete creative control to indulge himself, didn’t mean he would deliver another one. Far from it, in fact. In an effort to make the most of his free time during the pandemic, Levinson chose to create a monochrome romantic drama that aimed to delve into the themes of life, love, and solitude. However, he also included a scene that turned out to be a comically blunt tirade against film critics, overshadowing the film's deeper intentions. As a product of Hollywood's pervasive nepotism, he utilized characters from his own script to lament the struggles of affluent creatives. It's neither bold nor particularly insightful. Tenet (Christopher Nolan, 2020) A huge part of Christopher Nolan’s persona as a filmmaker is that he’s been embraced as a director who engaged the brain while working on a blockbuster-sized budget. It’s largely worked, although he did come close to disappearing entirely up his own arse with Tenet. Can’t hear the dialogue properly over the deafening sound mix? Fuck you, he doesn’t care. Need your handheld while agonising exposition explains everything in nauseating detail? Nobody did, but he wrote it anyway. Tenet was heralded as a reinvention of action cinema and Nolan’s latest masterful deconstruction of the concept of time, but the entire story unfolds as such: it starts at the end, meets itself in the middle, and ends at the beginning. Hardly revolutionary, and his weakest film by far. Don’t Look Up (Adam McKay, 2021) There are few things more pretentious than highly paid Hollywood types thinking themselves the smartest people in the room, using an extravagant budget to try and prove it, and climbing on top of their soapbox to yell it for the world to hear. That’s Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up in microcosm, which seems to exist largely because Netflix has a lot of money to spend and a lot of A-listers wanted to join the director on his lofty pedestal. Assuming that nobody would understand the messaging if it wasn’t framed through a blockbuster disaster comedy, how it earned a ‘Best Picture’ nomination at the Academy Awards beggars belief. It unfolds over a nauseating 138 minutes, but the theme is thus: climate change is bad, and something should be done on a global scale before it’s too late. Well, no shit. Everything Everywhere All At Once (Daniels, 2022) The winner of seven Academy Awards, including ‘Best Picture’, ‘Best Director’, and ‘Best Actress’, it can’t be denied that Daniels’ Everything Everywhere All at Once is a deliriously enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours. It's a film that's hard not to enjoy, but that doesn't necessarily mean it showcases exceptional cinematic brilliance. To avoid being overly critical, it's somewhat reminiscent of a Marvel film, but executed better. The narrative revolves around themes of reconciliation, confronting the past, and tackling generational trauma directly—ideas that remain significant and relatable, though not particularly innovative. While it’s a thrilling genre piece with plenty of flair, there may not be as much depth beneath the surface as many viewers might assume. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (Quentin Tarantino, 2019) Self-indulgence and Quentin Tarantino go hand in hand, which helps explain why Once Upon a Time in Hollywood scratched the itch for everyone who was desperate to know what would have happened had Sharon Tate not been murdered and Brad Pitt had saved the day instead. A heartfelt letter to himself, shrouded in the warm haze of 1969 Los Angeles—a time when a young Quentin Tarantino, a local boy, first discovered his passion for film. In this narrative, the auteur takes creative liberties to reshape history, meticulously crafting a fantasy world where no detail is overlooked. Figures like Tate, Bruce Lee, and George Spahn, alongside popular television shows and era-appropriate music, blend seamlessly into the filmmaker's personal universe, created solely to appease his singular audience.
